Janet pulled out a movie from her collection this weekend: Mr. Holland’s Opus. I had never seen it, and I figured watching it was a good way to avoid mowing the lawn for a couple of hours.
At the end of the movie I realized that Mr. Holland’s Opus was the School of Rock. There were minor differences but basically the plot was the same. A loser (Richard Dreyfuss and Jack Black) who can’t make it as a professional musician takes a job teaching music at a local school in order to pay his rent. There are parents who don’t like rock music. There are school administrators who don’t like what he how he is teaching. Along the way he meets talented kids who have no confidence in themselves and he helps them. He discovers that he is a good teacher and his students love him. There’s a concert at the end of the movie. The End.
Some of the minutia was different – Richard Dreyfuss had a wife and a deaf son, while Jack Black is single and mooches off of his friend. Aside from that it’s the same movie.
