We decided to do some TV upgrading so we bought a small LCD television for the bedroom. The plan was to use it downstairs in the family room until we get our new TV stand (on order), then we’d spend the tax refund on a larger plasma and move the LCD upstairs. I’d also get a new DirecTV HD DVR installed at my leisure within the next week or two. So far so good. I picked up the TV yesterday and was going to hook it up today.
So far, so good. This morning I get an email from Janet telling me that the family room can only receive The Food Network, The Weather Channel, and the Mormon channel. This sounded exactly like the problem we had nearly a year and a half ago in the hockey room. I told Janet to do the standard repair first: unplug the receiver, wait a minute or two, plug it back in, and wait for the reboot. No joy, the receiver is nothing more than a paper weight now.
I called DirecTV to get a new HD DVR installed and they’ll be out tomorrow, along with a new 5 LNB antenna and another receiver for the bedroom. Ordering it was a breeze and overall I’m pretty happy with DirecTV’s customer service. The person I talked to seemed genuinely apologetic that I wouldn’t get the new hardware until tomorrow. I was expecting that I’d have to wait until the end of the week, or even later.
We should probably keep an eye on the receiver in the wine room. We’ve been using that one to feed a VCR so we can watch shows at our leisure. It’s the same brand, make, and model as the two that failed (they’re Hughes HBH-SA’s) but it’s a receiver I purchased separately after the other two were installed.

Why do you have a VCR if you have a DVR? That’s what Tivo is for. I think you are the only person I know who still owns a VCR.
The DVR doesn’t arrive until tomorrow.
The current incarnation of Tivo doesn’t work with DirecTV, and IMNSHO DirecTV is superior to Dish and Comcast cable so switching is not an option.
We’ve been recording TV shows in the other rooms on VHS and watching in the family room when we get around to it. The quality isn’t that great, and I had to buy a head cleaner last weekend, but overall it worked for us.
Now we will be able to either record one show while watching another live, or record two shows while watching a recording. Anything we can’t catch that way, we’ll have to still record on the VCR.
One thing I’d like to be able to do is record on one DVR and watch on another, but I don’t think the DirecTV version has that capability.
