Catholic bishops will fight Obama on abortion
The nation’s Roman Catholic bishops vowed Tuesday to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights, saying
the church and religious freedom could be under attack in the new presidential administration.
Bullshit. Your church and your religious freedom is not under attack. What is under attack is your ability to force your beliefs on people who don’t want them and don’t need them. You still have the freedom to practice your religion. You still can include or exclude anyone you want in your private club. You just can’t make personal choices for people who never asked for your opinion.
In an impassioned discussion on Catholics in public life, several bishops said they would accept no compromise on abortion policy. Many condemned Catholics who had argued it was morally acceptable to back President-elect Obama because he pledged to reduce abortion rates.
If you assholes would promote sex education and the use of contraceptives I might have some sympathy for your position. More sex education and contraception means far fewer unwanted pregnancies and far fewer abortions. What part of that don’t you understand? As long as you keep parroting the “contraception is evil” party line, your opinion on abortion is meaningless. It’s like you want scads of unwanted children in the world to keep people impoverished. Hmmm, maybe you do.
Archbishop Joseph Naumann of the Diocese of Kansas City in Kansas said politicians “can’t check your principles at the door of the legislature.”
What about the principle that we live in a secular, not Catholic nation and that the rights of all citizens are to be protected. We don’t live in a theocracy no matter how much you might want the U.S. to be one.
The discussion occurred on the same day the bishops approved a new “Blessing of a Child in the Womb.” The prayer seeks a healthy pregnancy
for the mother and a plea that “our civic rulers” perform their duties “while respecting the gift of human life.”
And we know how effective prayer is: not at all. A better stance would be to promote good prenatal medical care. That’s something that can make a difference.
Chicago Cardinal Francis George, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, is preparing a statement during the bishops’ fall meeting that will press Obama on abortion.
Guys in funny costumes who can recite Middle Eastern mythology are really not the right people to tell a man who taught constitutional law how to govern. I don’t think Cardinal George and his buddies really have anything of value to say to the new president.
